Over the turn of the year 22/23, I recorded these three small works by Lisanella Gentili in my studio. I have known these miniatures for a very long time and enjoy playing them immensely. They fascinate me because they are very colourful and play with old and new musical influences and ideas. And that in a very limited setting.
I've also been doing some research on female guitarists of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the fact that the authorship and context of the creation of these works so vehemently eludes any grasp both inspires and angers me.

Even after very intensive and ever new research in Italian music journals and magazines between 1890 and 1950, hardly anything can be found out about Lisanella Gentili. The three compositions were published in the years 1928 and 1929 in the Italian magazine for plucked instruments "Il Plettro" (Milano). The Impromptu is dedicated to the pianist Elsa Ferlazzo, who demonstrably existed and won the gold medal at a piano competition in Athens in 1940, for example. At the beginning of the 20th century there is evidence of several musicians with the surname Gentili in Italy. However. The origin of the works lies in the period of Italian fascism, and perhaps there were good reasons to be careful with one's own name.


Played on a guitar by Mathias Simon from 1906 (it is not the guitar on the cover). The instrument is built in the romantic style, it is rather small but powerful, melodious and possibly intended for the dilettante at home.
